The Gambling Kind
I found myself standing in the drugstore right behind
A lovely stranger on the checkout line
I thought I’d try to say hello, after all, you never know
And I have always been the gambling kind
I put money on a horse once, it came in last that day
I put dollar after dollar in machines that didn’t pay
And while you’ll never get your heart broke
In a game that you don’t play
You’ll never win if nothing’s on the line
I guess that’s why I’m still the gambling kind
She smiled sweetly, but politely she declined
Paid for her things and headed back outside
I watched her walk away, with nothing left to say
It’s just the price you pay to be the gambling kind
I put money on a horse once, it came in last that day
I put dollar after dollar in machines that didn’t pay
And while you’ll never get your heart broke
In a game that you don’t play
You’ll never win if nothing’s on the line
I guess that’s why I’m still the gambling kind
I left the counter, walked back in the bright sunshine
She was waiting on the sidewalk the whole time
She handed me her number
And just left me there to wonder
How she had come to be the gambling kind
I put money on a horse once, it came in last that day
I put dollar after dollar in machines that didn’t pay
And while you’ll never get your heart broke
In a game that you don’t play
You’ll never win if nothing’s on the line
I guess that’s why I’m still the gambling kind
